Xen Development

Help us focus our efforts on Xen development! Please suggest things you think would make the Xen project more useful. More importantly, rate the improvements you think are the most important.

Please note that this forum is NOT for requests related to either XCP or XenServer. Requests or comments related to those projects will be deleted.

Suggestions can involve the core Xen tree, or in Linux or qemu.

Be sure to describe primarily what problem you’re trying to solve. That will help us determine what the best technical solution is. It may even be that there already is a solution we can suggest you use.

Responses mean:

  • Under review: It’s on our radar, but no one has said they are working on it for a specific release
  • Planned: Someone has said they are working on it for a particular release
  • Started: Someone has started the code
  • Completed: The code is done, and should be available in the next release (if it’s not available already)

I suggest you ...

  1. support for shared folders like in virtualbox

It would be nice if we can mount a shared folder, viewed like a device, like in VirtualBox.

For example, to share a folder called "myshare", we run "modprobe vboxsf", then we can mount like "mount -t vboxsf /dev/myshare /mnt".

    • Live VM cloning

Allow running VMs to be cloned, rather than having to clone them by pausing.

      • let domUs automatically switch to PV after install

        Bascially, we love 3 things:
        1. Easy install, looking just like a native one (PXE without fuss) using an ISO. Thats something HVM knows how to do. Ideally autodetect nic typ so you don't end up stuck on emulated drivers.

        2. The High Performance from running a 100% PV domU. Nothing beats that. No matter if you need to run dozens or hundreds of domUs on a host, or if you want to enjoy battery-conserving zero-idle-overhead virtualization on a laptop.

        3. The great feeling if you converted a HV domU after install and see it fly.

        Now, question:
        Can't we…

        • VGA/GPU passthru support for AMD/NVIDIA GPUs

Review, cleanup and merge AMD/ATI and NVIDIA GPU passthru patches from xen-devel archives. These patches deal with GPU vendor specific tweaks required to properly fetch and passthru the VBIOS, and also deal with the various legacy VGA ioports, memory ranges, mmios, etc.

These patches are required to make the passthru GPU be the "primary" gfx card in the VM, and some GPUs won't work at all without these patches.

          • xl support for PVUSB for both PV and HVM guests

xm/xend supports PVUSB for both PV and HVM guests, so xl should support it aswell. Some information about PVUSB available from: http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Xen_USB_Passthrough.

PVUSB requires backend driver in dom0 kernel, and frontend driver in the guest kernel. Driver status:
Suse's xenlinux forward-ported patches contain PVUSB drivers for both PV and HVM guests (so also in unmodified_drivers). Konrad's git tree has initial port of PVUSB drivers to pvops, but those should be reviewed, cleanup up and upstreamed. Also James Harper's Windows GPLPV drivers contain early version of PVUSB frontend driver.

            • Dom0 keyboard/mouse sharing/passthru to HVM guest

This feature is mostly needed by VGA/GPU passthru users, so they can share the dom0 keyboard/mouse to the HVM guest where they use the GPU.

Some initial implementations have been done earlier and discussed on xen-devel, but nothing has been merged to upstream Xen.

              Earlier discussion and patches:
              http://old-list-archives.xen.org/archives/html/xen-devel/2010-03/msg00979.html
              and
              http://lists.xen.org/archives/html/xen-devel/2012-01/msg00585.html

XenClient also has some implementation of keyboard/mouse sharing.

              • xl support for USB device passthru to HVM guest Qemu emulated USB

xm/xend currently supports USB device passthru from dom0 to HVM guest, using qemu-dm-traditional. USB device will show up in the emulated USB controller in the HVM guest, so no extra drivers are needed in the guest kernel. Currently Xen qemu-dm only emulates USB 1.1, so the performance is quite poor, but with upstream Qemu USB 2.0 / 3.0 should be possible.

xl should support USB device passthru to HVM guest Qemu emulated USB controller with both qemu-traditional and also with qemu-upstream.

                Some more information here:

                • HVM guest direct kernel/initrd boot support

Support being able to specify a kernel and initrd/initramfs for an HVM guest, like you can for PV domUs, and being able to directly boot them without going for the legacy BIOS boot sequence.

                  KVM support this.

                  • xl support for PVSCSI

xm/xend supports PVSCSI, so xl should support it aswell.
PVSCSI is useful for passing thru SCSI/FC/SAS tape drives, autoloaders, tape robots, backplane/chassis management devices, disk LUNs, or any other SCSI device to a Xen VM. In addition to passing thru single devices/LUNs PVSCSI can also passthru all devices/LUNs on a SCSI/FC/SAS host controller. PVSCSI can also be used for NPIV.

                    More information about PVSCSI:
                    http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Paravirtualized_SCSI

PVSCSI requires backend driver in dom0 kernel, and frontend driver in guest kernel. Suse's xenlinux forward-ported patches contain PVSCSI drivers, also for HVM guests (unmodied_drivers). Konrad's git tree has initial port of PVSCSI to pvops.…

                    • Automatic NUMA optimization

NUMA systems are becoming more common; configuring such a system optimally and keeping it optimal is difficult. It would be nice if Xen could automatically place and move VMs according to current conditions to optimize performance.

                      • Add a way to import and export VMs into xl

Lots of people publish VM appliances in VMDK or OVS format. It would be really helpful if there were a simple command to import or export a VM from one of these formats to something easily usable by xl.
